Oil Cooler Hoses on Series III XJ6 Jaguar can Leak

Bob from New Zealand contributed this techbit. He has a Series III XJ6 and had the following problem:

"The rubber pipes to the engine oil cooler and to the power steering pass close together in the area immediately above the oil filter; one of the engine oil cooler pipes had been chafing on a power steering pipe and in 15 years and 65,000 miles eventually wore a hole in the engine oil hose. As this circuit is under full engine oil pressure this dumped all the engine oil out within about 3 miles. We first noticed smoke in the rear vision mirror then the oil pressure started to drop. I pulled over well before the oil light came on so am hoping engine is undamaged. Well worthwhile checking and replacing these hoses once in a while though!"
