Ok, straight from the shop floor: This week’s tech bit is about the fuel supply hose line on a 1979-1987 XJ6 XJS. This fuel hose may touch the battery on its way to the fuel rail. We just had a car in the shop with a fuel supply hose that had been partially eaten away by battery corrosion, and had swelled and was ready to burst. Can anyone spell FIRE? Check yours today. In general, the fuel lines under the hood are in a hostile environment and deserve regular inspection. The heat tends to harden and crack them, and over time they will develop splits. The clamps will also loosen over time, allowing fuel to leak past the ends of the hoses. Fuel leaks WILL BURN YOUR CAR TO THE GROUND!
This isn’t idle speculation, this is a regular occurrence, particularly for the V12 cars. When replacing this fuel line (a good idea, if yours isn’t new) be sure to use only the FUEL INJECTION hose. It’s expensive because it’s reinforced to withstand the higher fuel line pressures required of the fuel injection system. Regular fuel lines will bleed through, allowing fires to start. Remember, if it seems reasonably priced then it’s the wrong stuff. We sell the correct fuel hose by the meter on the website.
