DIY Preventive Maintenance for Jaguar XJS Wiper Motor (1988 and Earlier Models)
If you own an early Jaguar XJS (1988 and earlier), your vehicle likely uses the Lucas wiper motor system. In the middle of 1988, Jaguar switched to the Electrolux wiper system. To determine which system you have, observe the wiper parking position: if the wipers park to the right, your vehicle is equipped with the later Electrolux system.
Unfortunately, new Lucas wiper motors are no longer available. The only option is to purchase rebuilt ones, which can be exorbitantly priced. Therefore, it is in your best interest to maintain and protect your existing wiper motor. A common cause of failure in these motors is the plastic rain cover installed over the motor. These covers tend to crack over time, allowing water to seep into the motor, leading to corrosion and electrical shorts. New plastic rain covers are also not available.
To prevent this, regularly inspect your rain cover. If you notice any cracks, you can easily fashion a new cover from a durable piece of plastic, such as from a milk carton. Creating a sturdy and intact rain cover will help protect your wiper motor from moisture and extend its lifespan, ultimately saving you money.
